AFGHANISTAN - (Pakistan)
We have been active in the broader area since autumn 2001 (October-November)
when we undertook an assessment mission based in Pakistan and having
as action field the borderline of Afghanistan and Pakistan, in particular
the areas of Quetta and Peshawar.
Since February 2002 we have established a permanent mission based in
Kabul, Afghanistan. From an early stage we initiated all procedures
to ensure the certification of our Organization in the country, and
have had and continue to have several meetings and collaborations at
a regular basis with a number of key players and authorities (governmental
authorities, international organizations, local NGO's, Greek diplomatic
authorities, etc.)
At the first stage we implemented the collection, storage and distribution
of humanitarian help gathered in Greece. Our next step was to create
and establish the Afghan-Hellenic Nursing School in Kabul in January
2003, which has been successfully running since. In February 2004 we
will establish the Afghan-Hellenic Midwife School. Besides these programs,
we have been running for two years now a Mobile Pre-Hospital Unit, bringing
medical services directly to the people.
FYROM
In 1999, we supported, in cooperation with the Greek department of
the NGO "Medicins du Monde", sanitarily (paramedical staff)
and technically (technical supervisor) a refugee camp of 15.000 people.
In this context we also visited twice the area of Kosovo.
In 2003 we established an Office in the town of Skopje, where we implemented
a development program in the mental health sector (inauguration and
running of workshops of vocational training for post-psychiatric patients).
The program was concluded at 16.01.2004 and the workshops were handed
over to the local community to continue their actions.
Yugoslavia
In July 1999, again in cooperation with "MdM", we initiated
the humanitarian mission in the country based in Nis and with action
in three peripheral prefectures.
Since January 2000, HRT has developed autonomous action in the area,
opening offices in several towns (Kralievo 2000, Nis 2001, Belgrade
2002) and developing action in the sector of the Pre-Hospital Health
Care System of the country in 33 prefectures and 35 Health Centers
of Central and Southern Serbia and 2 Central Hospitals (Kraljevo,
Nis).
Furthermore, we implemented a pilot program stepping up (repairing
and equipping) two nurseries for infants and children (Vrmdza &
Bucko, county of Soko Bania).
IRAK - (Jordan)
HRT's first presence in the area was in February 2003, conducting
an assessment mission and preparing the support for refugee camps
in the borderline of Jordan and Iraq. In April 2003 we established
a Mission Office in Amman, Jordan and soon after that an Office in
Baghdad, Iraq.
The mission had two main actions.
On the one hand the nationwide collection (with the mobilization of
all 29 departments of HRT in Greece, the Union of Greek Prefectures
and the support of Hellenic Aid), selection, preparation, shipping
and distribution of humanitarian help (consisting mainly of food and
medical material) to certain vulnerable population groups (women,
children, homeless, elderly people, patients) in Baghdad and neighboring
areas.
On the other hand we delivered two ambulances, which are operating
as Mobile Medical Pre-Hospital Units in the capital and its suburbs.
The mission left Baghdad in the beginning of October due to security
considerations. Despite that we are on hold for the re-activation
of the mission.
IRAN
HRT accompanied and delivered humanitarian help, consisting out of
medical material as well as winter clothing for the suffering population
after the destructive earthquake of Bam on 26.12.2003.
HRT is also cooperating with a wide range of international
actors on a regular basis or ad-hoc depending on the country of action.
We have implemented programs funded by ECHO (European Commission Humanitarian
Office), cooperated with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees) in Yugoslavia, have been members of the ICVA (International
Committee of Volunteer Agencies), are members of the Hellenic General
Secretariat of Civil Protection and have been recently certified by
the Hellenic Ministry of Health and the other relevant NGO Registers,
while being in the process of conducting a cooperation agreement with
UNDAC/INSARAG (United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination, International
Search and Rescue Advisory Group).
HRT Members are attending on a regular basis training programs of
OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs).
On certain occasions we are cooperating with international authorities
and local organizations in crisis-countries (International Red Cross
and Red Crescent and its local departments, UN Agencies, Organizations
of Regional Administration, etc.)
