ΗRT Lesvos: Refugees search and rescue mission in the region of Kara Tepe

On Sunday, October 25th at 5:52am HRT Lesvos was informed by the Central Port Authorities of Mytilini about a shipwreck at the region of Kara Tepe.

The intensive winds of 6-7 Beaufort that were blowing in the specific sea region resulted in the dingy, with about 60 refugees, crashing on the rocks. 50 people reached the shore, while 10 refugees are still missing.

A 6-member hiker's group of HRT Lesvos arrived in the area immediately and started the investigation from two points towards the area where the accident took place.

In the area there had been already in operation a coastguard boat, helicopters with thermal cameras and a FRONTEX ship. A hiker's team from the Mitilini Fire Service and other volunteers also participated in the search mission.

HRT Lesvos volunteers quickly reached the spot where the fire service had identified the bodies of a 10-year old boy, an infant and a woman. In the same area a wounded person was spotted, who was transferred from the HRT Lesvos volunteer's team in a safe place.
